The Bhagavad Gītā's teachings on devotion, divine knowledge, and the nature of consciousness

Part 3 covers Chapters 6 through 14, moving from the practical disciplines of the meditative life into the Gītā's most devotional and visionary teachings. Drawing on the foundations established in the earlier parts, Dr Bhat guides students through the Jñāna-Vijñāna Yoga of Chapter 7, the mystery of Akṣara Brahman in Chapter 8, the royal path of Rāja-Vidyā in Chapter 9, the overwhelming vision of the cosmic form in Chapter 11, and the tender devotional teachings of Chapter 12. The course bridges the philosophical and the personal — showing how these timeless teachings touch the texture of everyday life.

Course Structure

  • Using the Gopālānanda analogy — the Gītā as a cow that always yields fresh milk — Dr Bhat explains why studying this text again and again is never repetition. The three great divisions of the Gītā are mapped, and Chapter 6 (Ātmā Yoga) is revisited to establish the ground for all that follows.

  • A deeply practical class on Dinācārya — the daily routine as a container for spiritual life. Rising at brahma-muhūrta, measured eating, sleep, structured practice: the tools that make meditation not an effort but a natural outcome.

  • Chapter 7 establishes the foundation of Bhakti Yoga. Kṛṣṇa reveals himself as the essence in all things — as rasa in water, as strength in the strong, as light in fire. Recognising this presence is where devotion begins.

  • Continuing Chapter 7, this class deepens the understanding of Brahman as not remote but woven into every experience. The three guṇas are introduced as the veil concealing this reality, and the path to seeing through it is explored.

  • The final verse of Chapter 7 opens into Chapter 8 (Akṣara Brahman Yoga). The distinction between Vidyā (information) and Vijñāna (direct experiential understanding) is introduced, along with the concepts of Kṣara and Akṣara Puruṣa and the supreme Puruṣottama.

  • Chapter 8 from verse 8. Whatever you are doing, the recitation of God's name should continue in the mind. The concept of anta-kāle — consciousness at the moment of death — and the role of abhyāsa (sustained practice) are explored. Prāṇāyāma practices, including Bhrāmarī and Nāḍī Śodhana, are discussed.

  • Chapter 8 continued. What does it mean to die consciously? The three bodies — sthūla, sūkṣma and kāraṇa śarīra — are explained, along with how Prārabdha, Āgāmi and Sañcita karma shape consciousness at the time of death.

  • Chapter 9 — Rāja-Vidyā Rāja-Guhya Yoga — is the royal knowledge, the most accessible and the most direct. The three stages of learning, understanding and experience are outlined, and the Navadha Bhakti — nine forms of devotion — are named and explained.

  • Chapter 9 from verse 26. Even the simplest offering, made with devotion, is received. Gītā 9.27 — yat karoṣi yad aśnāsi — reveals that every action, meal, offering and discipline can become a sacred offering. This is ananya-bhakti in its most practical form.

  • he most dramatic moment in the entire Gītā. Arjuna is granted the divya-cakṣu — the divine eye — and sees Kṛṣṇa's overwhelming cosmic form. Dr Bhat explores the significance of ugra-rūpa and why this vision both terrifies and transforms.

  • The transition from Chapter 11 to Chapter 12. After the cosmic vision, Arjuna asks a simpler question: which is better — saguṇa or nirguṇa upāsanā? Both paths are explored, and the class introduces the qualities of those who are dear to Kṛṣṇa.

  • The closing class draws together the final teachings of Part 3 — the devotee qualities of Chapter 12, the Kṣetra-Kṣetrajña teaching of Chapter 13, and the Guṇatraya Vibhāga Yoga of Chapter 14. The guiding question: how can we live in a way that keeps us close to divine consciousness at every moment?

By the end of Part 3, you will have:

  • A grounded understanding of how to structure daily spiritual practice

  • A felt sense of how devotion (Bhakti) arises naturally from knowledge

  • Insight into the nature of consciousness — in life and at death

  • Familiarity with the nine forms of devotion and how to practise them

  • An understanding of the cosmic vision and the path of surrender it points toward

  • A bridge from the earlier parts of the Gītā into its final philosophical teachings
