The Opening Mantra of Ashtanga Yoga
In this video, Tara describes the three most common mistakes when reciting this mantra and how to correct your pronunciation.
More than just a practice
Sound is one of the oldest and most sophisticated tools in the yogic tradition. When a mantra is given correctly, with the right syllable length, tonal quality and rhythm, it acts directly on the prāṇic body. Udāna vāyu, the upward-moving energy that governs the throat, expression, and refined states of awareness, is cultivated and clarified through consistent, precise chanting practice. The anatomy of this sruti parampara tradition has been understood and transmitted in this way for thousands of years.
Mantra is an inner technology. A means of organizing the mind, steadying the nervous system, and gradually opening the practitioner to dimensions of experience that the ordinary thinking self cannot access alone. It belongs to anyone willing to learn it with sincerity.
The Science of Sound, Śikṣā
Vedic chanting is transmitted through Śikṣā, the ancient science of phonetics that governs how mantra is learned and passed on. Every syllable has a precise quality. Every tonal accent carries meaning. Every rhythm produces a distinct effect in the body and mind.
This precision is what gives mantra chanting its potency. And it is what lineage exists to protect, not as restriction, but as an act of care. When a teaching is held intact across generations, the student receives something whole.

Meet Your Teacher, Tara Mitra
I have been studying Vedic chanting for over twenty years, with twelve years of daily, unbroken practice under two primary teachers. Dr Vigneshwar Bhat, a Vedic priest, scholar, and author of The Splendor of Mantra, he has guided my study of ritual, mantra transmission and Vedic phonetics for over a decade. Alongside this, I have trained as a yoga therapist within the Sri Krishnamacharya and Sri Desikachar lineage, where Vedic chanting is considered an integral part of therapeutic practice.
I am also half Indian, with Ayurvedic physicians and yogis in my family lineage. This knowledge has always been close. Teaching it feels like a natural continuation of something I was always moving toward.
As a yoga therapist and educator, I bring both rigour and genuine care to how I work with students. Sessions are thorough, precise, and deeply relational. I listen carefully; I want to understand where you are, what you are ready for, and what this practice can personally support you. The goal is never to teach you to repeat something correctly, but for you to carry a mantra practice that is genuinely yours.
