What are the Yoga Sutras?
The Sutras are a set of 196 short teachings written by the sage Patañjali around 2,000 years ago, divided into four parts:
1. Samadhi Pada: Teaches the "ultimate goal of yoga," which is achieving a peaceful state of being (samadhi) by calming the mind.
2. Sadhana Pada: Explains the methods of practicing Sadhana, including the "8 Limbs of Yoga (Ashtanga)":
Yama – Ethical Principles
Niyama – Personal discipline
Asana – Physical postures
Pranayama – Breath regulation
Pratyahara – Sense withdrawal
Dharana – Concentration
Dhyana – Meditation
Samadhi – Self-realization
3. Vibhuti Pada: Explores the benefits of regular yoga practice, diving deeper into meditation (dhyana) and purification (suddhi), and the powerful manifestations that come with advanced practice.
4. Kaivalya Pada: Discusses ultimate liberation (kaivalya), freedom from suffering, and connection to the true self.
